Offering Description

This course explores technical and theoretical issues in the design, implementation, and use of GIS for research and applications. A lab component is included.

Target Audience
Professionals and post-baccalaureates working in fields that use geospatial technologies and pursuing training opportunities or looking to advance or revamp their current career path, teachers pursuing continuing-education credits, and international students seeking an educational experience and certification from an American university.

Goals and Objectives
1. Know the hardware and software components of a GIS, including ways data are stored and retrieved.
2. Understand the principles and methods of spatial data collection, analysis, and display.
3. Know how to use GIS to analyze and display geographic information.

Specific Learning Outcomes
By the completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe the spatial components of a problem and how spatial analysis can help to solve that problem.
2. Apply various GIS analysis tools to specific analytical situations.
3. Obtain geographic/spatial data from outside sources.
4. Create a GIS project and perform spatial analysis to solve a geographic problem.
