Offering Description

The course provides an introduction to electrical codes and State Public Acts affecting the electrical trades that are enforced in Michigan. The class work provides the foundation for more complex electrical installations and topics discussed in later courses. Students will develop an understanding of how to use and interpret the National Electrical Code. Topics of study include an introduction into selecting, installing, and sizing electrical device boxes, raceways, overcurrent protection devices and electrical conductors. Learners will gain knowledge the differences between system and equipment grounding and how to size equipment, bonding and grounding electrode conductors. The basic requirements of how to install a single-phase service entrance will also be addressed in the course.

Section Description: This course is based on the 2014 National Electrical Code. For this course the following materials will be needed a Calculator, 2014 National Electric Code (ISBN Number 978-1455906727) and Interpreting the National Electrical Code - 9th Edition, Delmar Cengage Publishers ( ISBN: Number 978-1-111-54442-3) Students who are taking this class as part of a mandated electrical apprenticeship training program must also pay the annual $100 administrative fee.
