Offering Description

This course teaches students map design, including topics such as typography, the use of color and symbols, and customizing design for output media. A lab component is included.

Target Audience
Professionals and post-baccalaureates working in fields that use geospatial technologies and pursuing training opportunities or looking to advance or revamp their current career path, teachers pursuing continuing-education credits, and international students seeking an educational experience and certification from an American university.

Goals and Objectives
1. Know the principles of well-designed maps for various output media.
2. Articulate the value of graphics and maps to communicate information.
3. Use mapping and graphics software to create original maps according to cartographic design principles.

Specific Learning Outcomes
By the completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Design informative maps based on well-established cartographic principles using ESRI ArcMap and Adobe Illustrator software.
2. Critique maps based on the principles of good cartographic design.
3. Understand how factors can influence communication of geographic information.
4. Design a simple website and upload files to that website.
